Setting of the Library

Page history last edited by Jill Whitson 14 years, 9 months ago

Greene Central High School is located just outside of Snow Hill, North Carolina, the county seat of Greene County. It was built in 1961 and combined all the "white" schools in the county under one roof. The "colored" schools were integrated into the school around 1970. The library's collection contains many volumes from these old schools! This is a picture of the Snow Hill School from long ago.

The media center at Greene Central is staffed by one media coordinator, myself, and various student assistants. The center is located toward the back of the school and the English Hall is adjacent for easy access for students.

The library itself is very large, the circulation desk is directly in front of the front doors to the facility and the entire library can be viewed from there. The desk is equiped with a new iMac desktop computer with Destiny Software. There are 4 more iMac searchstations located in the back of the library.

To the left of the front door is the graphic novel section and the comfy couch area. The students migrate to this inviting area that we created this year.

Directly adjacent to this area is the Fiction and New Book Area.

On the other side of the circulation desk are the non fiction books that line the walls and lots of tables and chairs that are well used by both students and faculty. There is also a large conference table that can be used for meetings and serving food at different events.

I recently was able to re-acquire some red wall partitions that had been purchased for the library some years ago. I had the shop teacher come in with his students to assemble it in the back corner of the library. I created a special space for teachers called the ReAD room (red)! It houses the professional library, a telephone, lamp, office supplies, a comfy chair, a work table, student art work and a coffee pot!! The teachers love it! And the bonus is they come in the library more often now.

There is a large workroom in the back that contains the Princeton files, newspapers from the recent past, literature collections for the English classes, storage for cameras etc. and a sink with plenty of cabinet space. It is full of years worth of "goodies" that need to be organized eventually!
